Some non-native characters had important roles: the restaurant/motel owner, the band manager, the nurse and the town’s main RCMP officer. Writer Peter Moffat has spoken of wanting to create ‘a British Heimat’, alluding to Edgar Reitz’s epic German saga Heimat, which followed one extended family in a region of Rhineland from 1919 to 1982.
