Misfit Missouri brothers Jesse and Frank James (Robert Wagner, Jeffrey Hunter) turn to crime in the post-Civil War South.

When his cattlemen abandon him for the gold fields, rancher Wil Andersen is forced to take on a collection of young boys as his cowboys in order to get his herd to market in time to avoid financial disaster. The boys learn to do a man’s job under Andersen’s tutelage; however, neither Andersen nor the boys know that a gang of cattle thieves is stalking them.

After being captured during a bank robbery, a cowboy is sent to a prison located in a swamp, where he contracts malaria. He soon escapes and, with the help of a Mexican, sets out to track down his partner, who escaped from the bank robbery with all the money.
